Turkish Doctors Performed Challenging Surgeries in Ethiopia through TİKA

With the cooperation between Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TİKA) and the Association of the Friends of Africa (TADD), Turkish volunteer doctors performed 70 general, brain, urology, and obstetric and gynecologic surgeries in 5 days by pushing the limits in southern Ethiopia.

Tens of patients hoping to regain their health in the region of Worabe in Ethiopia finally found happiness. TADD volunteers, who provided remedy to patients in the region of Afar in Ethiopia, performed challenging surgeries at the Worabe Hospital in 5 days with limited opportunities.

Gynecologists and obstetricians at the Worabe Training Hospital were trained about uterine prolapse, which is common in the region, and operations to treat this condition were performed.

In the field of General Surgery, especially patients with goiter, thyroid cancer, and other diseases requiring advanced general surgery operations were treated. Experiences regarding these operations were conveyed to the doctors at this hospital.

In the field of urology, especially patients with prostate diseases were treated.

“We performed surgeries, especially brain surgeries, which could not be performed in Ethiopian conditions.”

Speaking to an Anadolu Agency correspondent, Dr. Serhat Onur stated that medical specialists made a significant contribution to the training of their local colleagues, and said: “We performed surgeries, especially brain surgeries, which could not be performed in Ethiopian conditions.” Emphasizing that Ethiopian doctors had the chance to observe some surgeries for the first time, Onur said that the equipment brought from Turkey was used in general, brain, urology, and obstetric and gynecologic surgeries and that the efforts to supply such equipment to the regional hospital began.

The TADD team consisted of Urology Specialist Dr. Onur, Neurosurgery Specialist Prof. Dr. Erol Taşdemiroğlu, General Surgery Specialist Dr. Ahmet Demirçak, Obstetrics and Gynecology Specialist Dr. Bekir Gülaç, and Nurses Eylem Polat, Songül Suna, and Ayşe Yetkin.
