Agricultural Support from TİKA to Djibouti

Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TİKA) and Djibouti’s Ministry of National Education and Vocational Training established the Department of Greenhouse Education in Dikhil Technical High School in the city of Dikhil.

In Djibouti, where the cultivable land is 1% of the surface area due to its soil structure, the total area used for agricultural activities is approximately 600 hectares. The production in this limited area can only fulfill 10% of the needs of the country.

TİKA built a total of 500 sq. meters of applied greenhouse gardens on an area of 2000 sq. meters at Dikhil Technical High School, located in one of the cultivable regions in Djibouti, in order to meet the country’s needs of production, employment, and food by establishing an infrastructure for the agricultural development of the country and encouraging young people for agricultural activities. A germination-nursery workshop, a fertilization workshop, a water tank, and a solar water pump system were built, and a training program in the field of greenhouse was organized for students.

The first Department of Greenhouse in a vocational high school in the Republic of Djibouti was built by TİKA and aims to support agricultural activities in the region and improve employment and production capacity. Moreover, the point of sale built at the Greenhouse Education Center contributes to the increase in sustainable and income-generating activities.

Djibouti’s Minister of National Education and Vocational Training Moustapha Mohamed Mahmoud, Turkey’s Ambassador to Djibouti Salim Levent Şahinkaya, Dikhil Governor Mohamed Cheiko Hassan, Dikhil Province’s Manager of Agriculture Abdourahman Omar Banjir, and representatives of the NGOs in the region attended the inauguration ceremony of the Greenhouse Department and Education Center.

During his speech at the ceremony, Djibouti’s Minister of National Education and Vocational Training Moustapha Mohamed Mahmoud said: “The Greenhouse Education Center built by TİKA will support agricultural activities in the region and educate young generations in the best conditions for agriculture.” Stressing the importance of the project, which brought vocational training and production together in line with the goals of the Government of Djibouti, Minister Mahmoud said: “I would like to thank Turkey and TİKA.”

Ambassador Şahinkaya said that Turkey made a positive contribution to the cooperation between the two countries through its institutions in Djibouti. Stressing the importance of the Department of Greenhouse in terms of passing agriculture to young generations, supporting production, and creating employment, Şahinkaya stated that Turkey places emphasis on its development-based cooperation with Djibouti.
