Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TİKA) held the training “Introduction to Disaster and Emergency Response (ADG)” for Montenegrin emergency health professionals in cooperation with Alliance of International Doctors (AID) and the Institute for Emergency Medical Services of Montenegro.

The project launched in 2017 within the scope of the Emergency Medicine Capacity Building Program (ATKAP), organized by Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TİKA), included a training program organized in cooperation with Alliance of International Doctors (AID) for physicians and emergency medical technicians from Bosnia and Herzegovina, aiming to build local trainer capacity and train trainers who would later teach courses on disaster and emergency response in their own country or in third countries.

As the restrictions introduced in response to the COVID-19 pandemic were lifted, a team of trainers from Bosnia and Herzegovina and Türkiye taught courses within the scope of the training “Introduction to Disaster and Emergency Response (ADG)” for 19 employees of the Institute for Emergency Medical Services of Montenegro on April 14 and 15, 2022.

Organized by TİKA and AID in Podgorica for 19 Montenegrin physicians and emergency technicians from six different regions, the training program included theoretical and applied courses on disaster health services, trauma and crush syndrome, triage and emergency scene management, transportation of the injured, and basic and advanced life support.

Montenegrin health professionals who passed the exam at the end of the training were presented with certificates with a ceremony.

In his speech at the certificate presentation ceremony, Vuk Niković, Director of the Institute for Emergency Medical Services of Montenegro, stated that TİKA’s support for the health sector has always been greatly appreciated by the people of Montenegro, and that feeling the support of Türkiye, which has a developed healthcare system, gave them great confidence. Niković added that they expected such projects to continue, and thanked TİKA on behalf of the institute and the trainees.

Abdurrahman S. Toprak, TİKA’s Coordinator in Podgorica, delivered a speech and noted that TİKA has implemented nearly 420 projects in Montenegro since 2007 and that more than 50 of them have been implemented in the health sector. Toprak stressed that TİKA attached great importance to professional development, and that the ultimate goal of TİKA’s training projects was to improve the local trainer capacity in countries. Toprak said that they were happy that trainers from Bosnia and Herzegovina taught training courses in Montenegro as a result of this approach. He thanked the trainers and trainees, and stressed that they were open to any training request.

Speaking on behalf of AID, Trainer Dr. Mehmet Eyyüp Hazar stated that they have organized training programs on disaster and emergency response in many countries, and thanked TİKA for holding the training in Montenegro.

The Agency aims to organize advanced training programs for the staff of the Institute for Emergency Medical Services of Montenegro within the scope of ATKAP.
