TİKA to Renovate Srebrenica Memorial Center in Bosnia and Herzegovina

Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TİKA) renovates the memorial center in the city of Srebrenica within the scope of the project for “Srebrenica Potocari Memorial Museum for the Victims of Genocide”.

 

The Potocari Old Battery Factory, which was the center of the genocide in Srebrenica, Bosnia and Herzegovina in July 1995, is one of the main areas where Bosniaks took refuge during the siege but were killed by Serbian forces, after being handed over by UN soldiers.

The factory, which is used as a commemoration center where the events of the genocide in which 8.372 Bosniak civilians were massacred and described as the greatest human tragedy after the Second World War in Europe are explained with photographs and where the belongings of those who lost their lives are exhibited under modest conditions, welcomes an average of 150.000 visitors each a year. The factory, which has survived almost in its original form, had decays and physical deformations on the roof covering, especially due to rain and snow waters.

In order to explain the genocide to the visitors in a professional and appropriate environment, TİKA started the renovation works of the building in 2021. At the beginning of 2023, extensive renovation works were started in the building, roof of the factory was renovated firstly. As of February, the architectural, electrical and mechanical renovation works of the museum started. Within the scope of the project, it is planned to establish a permanent museum on an area of ​​approximately
