TİKA Supports Fish Producers in Tanzania

Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TİKA), provided 4 ice machines for the fishers to benefit from in two different marketplaces within the borders of Unguja Kaskazini A Municipality.

Fishing is one of the most important sources of income for the people living in the coastal region of the mainland and Zanzibar island in Tanzania. The biggest problem in the sector, run by small and low-income businesses, most of which are comprised of a small number of employees, is inadequate preservation and refrigeration conditions.

Due to the lack of investment opportunities, the caught fish could not be stored in proper conditions and had to be sold within a few hours. In the meantime, the unsold fish had been spoiling and this situation had been causing significant revenue loss and waste.

Carrying out a project to contribute to the solution of the current problem, TİKA delivered 4 ice machines, to be used in two different marketplaces under the responsibility of Unguja Kaskazini A Municipality, to the municipality authorities with a ceremony.

The waste will be prevented and the revenue will be increased

The project that is held in both marketplaces and is predicted to benefit about 2000 fishers aims to enable fishers to store the caught fish longer as fresh and to increase sales revenue by preventing waste by this means.

Dr. Mehmet Güllüoğlu, Türkiye’s Ambassador to Tanzania; Auyoup Mahmoud, the Governor of Kaskazini; Khamis Mohamed Muhammad, the Director of the Municipal Council, council members, tradespeople of the fish market, and citizens attended the delivery ceremony held in Unguja Kaskazini A Municipality.

Speaking at the ceremony, Auyoup Mahmoud, the Governor of Kaskazini, thanked the Republic of Türkiye and TİKA for the project carried out and stated that the project will provide access to healthy and fresh fish not only for the tradespeople who are engaged in fishing but also for the hotels in the region.

In their speech, Ambassador Dr. Mehmet Güllüoğlu indicated that the Republic of Türkiye always stands by the fellow people of Tanzania and Zanzibar. Remarking that the ice machines, which will benefit all the tradespeople who make a living from fishing in the region, will prevent waste above all by enabling the caught products to be stored longer in a healthy condition, Ambassador Güllüoğlu said that they believe TİKA which carries out projects and activities in almost every sector, will put a smile on faces by increasing the income of the tradespeople through this project.
