TİKA Supports Education in Kenya

Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TİKA) renovated and equipped North Highridge Primary School and Kindergarten, the students of which live in the Deep Sea slum in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya.

TİKA also built two water tanks, one with a capacity of 10 tonnes and the other with a capacity of 3 tonnes, as well as 8 handwashing stations to be used by students and teachers as part of the measures against COVID-19.

TİKA renovated the classrooms, staff rooms, and administrative offices at North Highridge Primary School and Kindergarten, which have 250 primary school students and 40 kindergarten students, respectively, all living in the Deep Sea slum in Highridge, Nairobi.

In addition to the renovation, all the necessary furniture and educational materials were provided to the kindergarten.

The opening ceremony of the project was attended by Ahmet Cemil Miroğlu, the Republic of Turkey’s Ambassador to Nairobi; Tim Wanyonyi, an MP of the region; Eyüp Yavuz Ümütlü, TİKA’s Nairobi Program Coordinator; and the administrators, teachers, and students of the school.

In his speech at the ceremony, Ambassador Miroğlu said, “We consider North Highridge Primary School as the sister school of our embassy. Now, it looks very beautiful thanks to the support of TİKA. As Turkey, we will continue to support education in Kenya.”

MP Tim Wanyonyi stated that it has become an exemplary school in the region after the project carried out by TİKA and that the number of students enrolled in the school increased since families who previously sent their children to schools in remote areas enrolled their children in this school this term.

In his speech, TİKA’s Nairobi Program Coordinator Ümütlü said, “We believe that any support provided in the field of education is an investment in the future. Considering the importance of quality and accessible education especially at the preschool level, we provided next-generation educational materials to the kindergarten.”
