TİKA's Erenler Sofrası Put a Smile on Needy People's Faces in Somalia

As part of the Erenler Sofrası Ramadan Program, Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TİKA) distributed food packages to the refugees in Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia, as well the disabled people in Hargeisa, the capital of Somaliland, and the needy families who live in villages.

TİKA continues the food distribution programs under the name of Erenler Sofrası during the month of Ramadan, a culture of sharing, and keeps on putting a smile on the faces of needy people with the words of Yunus Emre, Haji Bektash Veli and Ahi Evran.

TİKA shared the spirit of peace, brotherhood and solidarity with the people of Somalia, which belonged to the Anatolian Erens who were the cultural flag-bearers of our geography of affection, which now transcends the borders of our country. 500 needy families in Somalia and Somaliland were handed out food packages by TİKA.

As part of TİKA's Erenler Sofrası program, food aid was provided for 400 families who live under difficult conditions in the refugee camps in Mogadishu. Also in Hargeisa, the capital of Somaliland, Ramadan packages were distributed to 100 low-income families who live in the villages as well as the disabled people. During the distribution programs, which were attended by TİKA’s Mogadishu Program Coordinator İlhami Turus, a total of 2.5 tonnes of food packages were delivered to 500 families.

The Ramadan packages that were distributed to the needy people in Somalia included basic food supplies such as rice, flour, pasta, sugar and oil.

The families who have received the Erenler Sofrası Ramadan food aid expressed their gratitude towards TİKA, people of Turkey and the President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

Due to the civil war and the terror incidents that have been going on in Somalia for 30 years, as well as the drought, mass migrations take place each year from the rural areas to large cities. After losing their estate mostly due to disasters, people desperately migrate to large cities such as the capital Mogadishu, crossing hundreds of kilometers in order to access food and drinking water. Having migrated from different areas of Somalia, these people build IDP (Internally Displaced People) camps in the surrounding areas of large cities. Today, there are more than 500,000 people who migrated to the capital Mogadishu, living in the IDP camps.
