TİKA Supports Victims of Hurricane Kenneth in Comoros

Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TİKA) provided emergency aid to 1,500 families whose homes and workplaces were affected by Hurricane Kenneth in Moroni, the capital of the Union of the Comoros. 

Hurricane Kenneth, whose winds reached 200 kilometers per hour, caused the death of 3 people in the Comoros, an island country connected to the continent of Africa. The hurricane caused significant damage in the capital Moroni, uprooting trees and harming electricity and telephone lines. Floods took place in many regions due to an insufficiency of infrastructure.
TİKA immediately provided emergency aid to disaster victims affected by the hurricane through its Moroni Program Coordination Offices. In this regard, 37.5 tons of rice were distributed to families whose homes were harmed in the regions of Foumbouni, Dembeni, Mohoro, Pidjani, Mitsoudj, Iconi, Karthala, Koumbani, Itsikoudi, Hahaia, Mbeni, Chezani, and Mitsamiouli. TİKA's emergency aid packages were conveyed to "Natural Disaster and Crisis Management" authorities to be distributed to families who were affected.

During his speech at the distribution ceremony, Natural Disaster and Crisis Management Head Colonel Ismael Mogne Doha touched upon the fact that training had been provided to the firefighters under the Comoros Civil Protection Directorate in Turkey with the contributions of TİKA as part of the training and experience sharing efforts targeting the Union of the Comoros in 2017. Highlighting the benefits of the 25-day training program, Doha expressed that the firefighters were able to intervene more professionally in the incidents they encountered during natural disasters thanks to their knowledge and skills. Stating that they were able to minimize fatalities and property damage thanks to these trainings, Doha expressed his gratitude to TİKA and Turkey for their support.

The Comoros, designated by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations as one of 22 hunger-threatened countries, is considered one of the poorest countries in the world. According to FAO's data on malnutrition, the Comoros ranked first with 65.3% among Muslim countries.
