21 June 2021TİKA Supports Agriculture in Mongolia
Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TİKA) built 5 summer greenhouses in Govi-Altai Province, Mongolia. Irrigation systems and water tanks were also provided for the greenhouses.
TİKA continues to implement agricultural projects in order to support the development of greenhouse production, increase local employment, and ensure food security in Mongolia.
In line with its goal of carrying out projects and activities in 330 districts across Mongolia, TİKA built 5 summer greenhouses in an oasis in the middle of the Gobi Desert in the town of Bayantooroi in Tsogt, Govi-Altai Province, which is located on the western border of Mongolia approximately 1,300 km from Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia, and shares a border with the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. As part of the project, irrigation systems and other equipment such as water tanks were also provided.
58,343 people living in Govi-Altai Province meet only 10% of their daily vegetable needs from local production and the rest from other provinces or countries. Each year, many people submit a request to the local government for permission to operate a greenhouse. In the district, which is located in the Gobi Desert in the southern part of Altai Mountains and has a suitable geographical location for the development of the agricultural sector, the project implemented by TİKA contributed to the increase in vegetable production, the employment of local people, and the development of greenhouse production in western Mongolia.
Officials of the Governorship of Govi-Altai Province stated that the project was very helpful as it contributed to the employment of local people, the development of the agricultural sector, and the access of local people to fresh fruits and vegetables, which were among the priorities of the government. They thanked the Turkish people and TİKA for their support on behalf of all local people and said that they were very pleased with the project.
