Traditional Bosnian Carpets Will Be Woven On Looms Provided By TİKA

A carpet weaving workshop was opened through a cooperation between the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency Directorate and the Bosanski Petrovac Municipality to revive the production of Traditional Bosnian carpets which have an artistic value that surpasses all commercial value, has been passed on from generation to generation and reflects the knowledge, experience and skill of the Bosnian women.

TİKA continues to support the revitalization and production of traditional crafts in Bosnia Herzegovina. A carpet weaving workshop was opened through a cooperation between the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency Directorate and the Bosanski Petrovac Municipality to revive the production of Traditional Bosnian carpets which have an artistic value that surpasses all commercial value, has been passed on from generation to generation and reflects the knowledge, experience and skill of the Bosnian women. The women of Bosanski Petrovac will be producing carpets in the workshop provided by the Bosanski Petrovac Municipality on looms provided by TİKA.

It has been reported that the population of Bosanski Petrovac located in Western Bosnia Herzegovina in Una-Sana Kanton, which was 15 thousand 621 before the war has receded to around 8 thousand after migrations and the number of employed within this population is determined to be 903. The city, in which the main source of income is agriculture and livestock, is also prominent as a center for traditional carpet production with a long history.

The 50 looms in the workshop which were provided by TİKA were handed over to the Municipality authorities in a ceremony organized for the occasion. The ceremony was attended by TİKA officials, Bosanski Petrovac Mayor Zlatko Hujić, Sunçiça Women Manufacturers Union members, city employees and a number of producer women.

Bosanski Petrovac Mayor Hujić who made a speech in the ceremony said that the looms provided by TİKA have made it possible for the production of Bosnian carpets to be continued in Bosanski Petrovac and by these means good quality products would be made available to the market. Mayor Hujić said that sales office will be established in a number of touristic regions, especially Saraybosna and Mostar. Bosanski Petrovac Mayor Hujić pointed out that with this workshop employment and income would be provided for women while at the same time cultural values were being kept alive and expressed gratitude to TİKA for its contributions.

The project undertaken by TİKA aims to both support traditional crafts and utilize the efforts of women while staying ahead of unemployment. The workshop to which 160 women have applied will also provide courses in weaving. Once the project has advanced into the production stage sales centers will be established in touristic areas and the products are planned to be sold to national and international markets.
