TİKA Supports the Production of Local Seeds in Uzbekistan

Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TİKA) modernized and opened the dormant one-hectare greenhouse owned by the Research Institute of Vegetable, Melon, and Potato Production, affiliated with the Research and Production Center for Agriculture and Food Supply of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Uzbekistan.

The Research and Production Center for Agriculture and Food Supply is one of the longest-established institutions in Uzbekistan and conducts studies on the cultivation of the fruit and vegetable seed plants most needed in the country, especially melons, potatoes, and other vegetables.

The Research Institute of Vegetable, Melon, and Potato Production, which is affiliated with the center, focuses on the cultivation, registration, licensing, and patenting of seed plants and produces hybrid seeds for more than 200 fruit and vegetable varieties, including 150 patented varieties.

The institute needed a trial greenhouse to cultivate high-yield seed plants through the trial planting of the melon, tomato, pepper, strawberry, and aubergine seeds donated by Turkey as part of the scientific research project carried out by the Institute in cooperation with the Ministry of Food, Agriculture, and Forestry of Turkey to combat plant diseases.

As part of the project, TİKA renovated the Institute’s one-hectare dormant Soviet-era greenhouse with a heating system, built an irrigation system, and donated greenhouse sheets and shading nets. The Agency put the greenhouse into service after the project.
