TİKA Supports The Fight Against Drought In Kenya

A total amount of 20 water ponds were built in Embu county of Kenya with support from Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TİKA).

In Kenya where the drought is declared as a national disaster, the agricultural sector is one of the most affected businesses. A total amount of 20 water ponds were built in Embu county to meet the necessary water needs for agricultural and daily use of Kenyan farmers, who have difficulty watering their crops, and to support the local people’s fight against drought.

The water pond which was dug about 8m/6m in size and 2m in depth is expected to be a solution to the problem of access to water for the local people whose livelihoods are agriculture.

The inauguration of the Project for the Installation of Geomembraned and Canopied Rainwater Storage Solutions, which is carried out in cooperation with a non-governmental organization named Sustainable Agriculture Community Development Programme (SACDEP), was held with a ceremony. Official for Agricultural Affairs in Mbeere North Region, Samson Njagi, Director of SACDEP, Ngugi Mutura, TİKA’s Coordinator in Nairobi, Eyüp Yavuz Ümütlü, and farmers attended the opening ceremony.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Official for Agricultural Affairs in Mbeere North Region, Njagi thanked TİKA and those who contributed.

TİKA’s Coordinator in Nairobi, Ümütlü stated that the water ponds would contribute positively and significantly to the fight against drought, the agriculture in the region, and sustainable development.
