TİKA Supports Flower Farmers in Peru

Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TİKA) built the second cold storage room for flowers in Peru in order to support flower farmers and increase their income.

TİKA implemented another income-generating project in South America. The Agency built a cold storage room for flowers in Cajamarca in cooperation with the Ministry of Agricultural Development and Irrigation of Peru (MIDAGRI) in order to support and strengthen the floriculture industry in the region and in the country.

5 different cities were prioritized for the development of the floriculture industry within the scope of the “Floriculture Development Plan 2030,” which was adopted as a state program by the Government of Peru. TİKA built a cold storage room for flowers in Junín, one of the prioritized cities, in 2021. Another cold storage room was built in Cajamarca, another prioritized city, within the scope of the development plan of the Government of Peru in order to support the plan and enable Peruvian farmers to earn sustainable income.

Rómulo Antúnez, Deputy Minister of Agricultural Development and Irrigation of Peru, delivered a speech at the inauguration ceremony held for the facility and stated that the project would contribute to boosting the floriculture industry and increasing the income of families who depend on floriculture for their livelihood. Deputy Minister Antúnez thanked TİKA for its invaluable support for the Floriculture Development Plan, which was followed within the framework of the Second Agrarian Reform.

Zoila Huamán, President of Cajamarca ECOFLOR Cooperative, expressed her gratitude as follows: “We would like to thank TİKA and Türkiye for their support for flower farmers in Cajamarca. We used to suffer great financial loss as we could not store the flowers we grew. We were forced to grow smaller amounts of flowers. This facility will enable us to grow more flowers and generate more income.”
