TİKA Supports Farmers in the TRNC

Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TİKA) provided long-lasting plastic greenhouse films to cover a greenhouse area of 4 hectares to the TRNC Famagusta Greenhouse Production and Marketing Cooperative.

TİKA continues to assist farmers through the projects implemented by its Nicosia Program Office to support producers after the outbreak of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in the TRNC. 

As part of the project, the worn-out greenhouse films of greenhouse owners will be replaced in the TRNC. The films were delivered to the TRNC Famagusta Greenhouse Production and Marketing Cooperative with a ceremony. The delivery ceremony was attended by Turkey’s Ambassador to Nicosia Ali Murat Başçeri, the TRNC’s Minister of Agriculture and Natural Resources Dursun Oğuz, Mayor of Famagusta İsmail Arter, TİKA’s Nicosia Coordinator Havva Pınar Özcan Küçükçavuş, cooperative representatives, farmers, and citizens.

Ambassador Başçeri said that he was excited to witness the inauguration of TİKA’s office in the TRNC in December and was happy that TİKA started its operations in the TRNC during his term of office. Stating that they discussed what they could do with TİKA’s Nicosia Office during the outbreak, Başçeri said, “Actually, TİKA has a remarkable ability to adapt to changing circumstances. We quickly thought about what we could do to combat the outbreak, and we implemented those projects.” Başçeri noted that the safety of food production and supply has become a pivotal issue during this period and that the importance of agricultural producers has become clear once again. Ambassador Başçeri added, “A significant part of greenhouse production in the TRNC takes place in Famagusta. The activities of greenhouse owners here are precious. These owners must be supported. TİKA’s Nicosia Program Office responded to their request quickly. I would like to thank them.”

Minister Oğuz reminded that production has become prominent once again during the outbreak, and stated that TİKA provided this assistance to support production. Noting that they attach great importance to the greenhouse cooperative and support them as much as possible, Oğuz remarked that TİKA implemented this meaningful project in a short time, and thanked those who contributed to the project. Mayor of Famagusta Arter reminded that producers had great difficulties during the COVID-19 outbreak and noted that TİKA’s rapid assistance would make them breathe a sigh of relief.

TİKA’s Nicosia Coordinator Küçükçavuş noted that TİKA’s Nicosia Office has implemented 4 projects since its inauguration on December 16, 2019. Küçükçavuş said, “Today, we are here to replace plastic greenhouse films in an area of 4 hectares. As part of this project, we provided plastic greenhouse films to the members of the TRNC Famagusta Greenhouse Production and Marketing Cooperative.”
