TİKA is the First to Lend a Helping Hand after the Earthquakes in Mexico

The Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TİKA) provides assistance to heal Mexico after the earthquakes.

Mexico suffered frequent earthquakes in the past five months. Since September 2017, there has been three separate earthquakes with a magnitude of 7.5 or above. The first one on September 8, 2017 was recorded as one of the worst disaster in history. After ten days, an earthquake of magnitude 7.5 affected the capital Mexico City deeply and hundreds of buildings collapsed leading to a long period of national mourning.

Finally, on February 17, 2018, an earthquake of magnitude 7.5 that affected mostly the state of Oaxaca on the western shore of Mexico hit the people living in mountainous and rural areas and created an urgent need for humanitarian assistance in many villages.

Following the developments closely, TİKA Mexico Program Coordination Office worked with the related governorate and determined the needs. Emergency supply packages were delivered to three separate mountainous settlements located roughly 250 kilometers away from Oaxaca city center. The packages contain basic food supplies, hygiene products, convenience foods, etc. Off-road and water ambulances provided by TİKA for emergencies in the previous earthquakes continue to serve the region.

In the letter he sent to TİKA, Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto thanked Turkey for the assistance provided to their country, which was struck by earthquakes in September, and remarked that this was an instance of great generosity the Mexicans would never forget.
