TİKA Established a Handicrafts Workshop for People with Disabilities in Djibouti

A handicrafts workshop was established for people with disabilities in Djibouti with the support of Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TİKA) as part of the Cultural and Artisanal Cooperative for People with Disabilities in Djibouti (CACPH) Capacity-Building Project.   

In her speech at the opening ceremony of the workshop, Ouloufa Ismail Abdo, Minister of Social Affairs and Solidarity of Djibouti, said, “We would like to thank TİKA and the Republic of Turkey for putting this workshop, which is equipped with easy-to-use and modern equipment, into service for people with disabilities. We will complete the project by organizing a training program in line with market needs. Furthermore, we would like to express our gratitude to Doualeh Saïd Mahamoud, Director of the National Agency for Persons with Disabilities of Djibouti, for renovating the workshop space and allocating it to this project.” 

Later, Salim Levent Şahinkaya, the Republic of Turkey’s Ambassador to Djibouti, delivered a speech and stated that TİKA had 62 offices in 60 countries and has implemented productive and good projects for those in need in Djibouti while the COVID-19 pandemic affected all industries, and that the project implemented was a good capacity-building project.        

Kutluhan Yücel, TİKA’s Coordinator, described the topic and purpose of the project and said, “I would like to emphasize that this project addresses and supports the themes of capacity building, vocational training, handicrafts, tourism, development of income-generating activities, and, most importantly, empowerment of people with disabilities.”  

The National Agency for Persons with Disabilities of Djibouti allocated a workshop space to the Cultural and Artisanal Cooperative for People with Disabilities in Djibouti as part of the project. TİKA provided machinery, equipment, and consumables to the workshop. In the second phase of the project, a 20-day training program will be organized for 15 people with disabilities who are new members of the cooperative with the support of the Ministry of Social Affairs and Solidarity of Djibouti.
