The First Step Was Taken in the Field of the Organ Transplantation Development in Georgia with the Support of TİKA

An opening ceremony was held for the project “Training on the Strengthening of Organ Donation and Transplantation Services and Intensive Care,” launched by Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TİKA) to ensure the development of organ transplantation in Georgia.

Held at the Center for High Scientific Technologies in Tbilisi, the capital, the opening ceremony was attended by Fatma Ceren Yazgan, Türkiye’s Ambassador to Tbilisi; Tamar Gabunia, Deputy Minister of Internally Displaced Persons from the Occupied Territories, Labour, Health and Social Affairs of Georgia; Gia Tomadze, President of the Georgian Association of Transplantologists; Prof. Eyüp Kahveci, President of the Turkish Transplant Foundation; Prof. Oktay Demirkıran, President of the Turkish Society of Intensive Care; and Tuba Özütok, TİKA’s Coordinator in Tbilisi.

As part of the project, healthcare providers from different parts of Georgia were trained on “Intensive Care” in the first step of the training provided by Turkish specialists.

With the project, training courses will be held throughout the year for the purposes of building medical, technical, legal, and ethical infrastructure in Georgia and contributing to the development of organ donation and transplantation in Georgia thanks to Türkiye’s knowledge.

In her speech at the opening ceremony of the project, Yazgan stated that she was very happy to attend such an event, and thanked all the parties involved in the training project, especially TİKA. Yazgan underlined that human health and life are extremely important, and stressed the importance of enabling Türkiye to share its experience in organ transplantation with Georgian authorities.

Özütok reminded that TİKA’s Program Coordination Office in Tbilisi has carried out numerous activities in various fields in Georgia since 1994. She said, “One of the most important issues for TİKA is its impact on human life. Therefore, it attaches importance to all activities in the field of health, which cannot be replaced by anything else in life.”

Noting that Türkiye and Georgia were two friendly nations, Özütok said that she believed the relations and cooperation between these countries would continue to improve and become stronger in the fields of health and medicine, as in other fields.

Gabunia stated that the project opened was very important for the health sector in Georgia, and that Turkish and Georgian specialists would share their experience with each other as part of the project.

Gabunia noted that in 2021, a memorandum was signed between Georgia and Türkiye in the field of Organ Donation and Transplantation Services with the support of TİKA. She said, “It is extremely important that the memorandum signed last year was put into effect.”
