05 August 2022Support from TİKA to Freshwater Aquaculture in Niger
A fish farm was opened in Niger, a landlocked country, where freshwater fishing is popular, with the support of Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TİKA).
A great majority of the population in Niger is living on agriculture and animal husbandry. Now, one more alternative agriculture and husbandry facility has been added to the means of living in Niger. A fish farm equipped with modern technology has been opened with the support of TİKA. In Niger, it has become a state policy to popularize integrated production facilities, especially to boost freshwater fishing.
50 Producer Families to Benefit from the Fish Farm
The fish farm was opened in Saga, a town 20 km far from the capital Niamey. The farm covers 8 fish farming pools, 1 water treatment reservoir, 1 feed manufacturing facility, 1 storehouse, 1 turning and ventilation unit as well as solar energy systems. The facility will serve for 50 families. The farm has been provided with 2000 tilapia and supplementary equipment.
Turkish-Nigerien Cooperation to Continue
A ceremony was held to handover the facility to the Saga Aquaculture Society founded by the fish farmers from Saga. Özgür Çınar, the Ambassador of Türkiye in Niamey, İrfan Pamuk, TİKA’s Niamey Coordinator and the Chief of Saga, Naazou Amadou participated in the ceremony. The speakers who took the floor wished that the facility would bring benefit to Saga’s people and stated that the deeply rooted Turkish- Nigerian cooperation will increasingly continue.
The purpose of establishing a fish farm in the region is to increase employment and production capacity.
