A Local Seed Project from TİKA in Uzbekistan

Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TİKA) transfers its technological experience to Uzbekistan as well as local and domestic solutions developed through potato improvement and breeding techniques in Türkiye.

With its recent project, TİKA aims to support local seed production in Uzbekistan. Thus, 6 licensed potato varieties that weigh 9 thousand 250 kg in total were brought from Türkiye and delivered to Taşkent Vegetable, Melon and Potato Research Institute for demonstration and efficiency test.

The potato varieties developed by Niğde Potato Research Institute and Turkish Private Seed Growing institutions will be reproduced in the research stations after experimental sowing. To obtain the optimal efficiency in experimental sowing, an agriculture kit consisting of a potato harvesting machine, a sowing machine, a weeding tool, a fertilizer spreader and a pulveriser were delivered to the institute. A springer irrigation system was established on an area of 2 decares, too. After sowing, experts from Türkiye will come and visit the institute in the vegetation and harvesting period, and Uzbek researchers will be sent to Türkiye for invitro tissue trainings.

Uzbekistan is completely foreign-dependent in terms of potato variety and certified seeds. Therefore, every year 15.000 tons of potatoes are imported to the country, and the efficiency in agricultural sowing is below the world’s average.
