4th Süleymaniye Symposium organised with the theme “Mughal Empire”

4^th International Süleymaniye Symposium was organised with the theme “Mughal Empire: New Sources, New Approaches” in Istanbul with the cooperation of the Department of History of Ibn Haldun University and Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TİKA).

4^th International Süleymaniye Symposium, which lasted from September 16 to 18, was organised with the theme “Mughal Empire: New Sources, New Approaches” in Salis Madrasa on Süleymaniye Campus in Istanbul with the cooperation of the Department of History of Ibn Haldun University and Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TİKA). Vice President of TİKA, Dr. Ümit Naci Yorulmaz, the President of Ibn Haldun University, Prof. Atilla Arkan, and 33 academicians from the USA, India, Austria, the UK, Pakistan and Canada presented papers in the symposium.

“We have a chance not to make mistakes in the future; we have our history and memory to rely on”

The President, Prof. Arkan delivered the opening speech at the symposium and said we are faced with rapid changes because of scientific and technological developments and international crises. He said as the future is being built, the relations between the East and West are taking a new direction. “We have a chance not to make mistakes in the future; we have our history and memory to rely on,” said Arkan. In this context, he referred to the importance of the symposium “Mughal Empire: New Sources, New Approaches.”  

“Our cultural heritage is transferred to next generations through reconstruction and restoration”

Vice President of TİKA, Dr. Yorulmaz, too, gave a speech and said as TİKA, they are very happy to be contributing to the symposium and thanked Ibn Haldun University and the academicians for their contributions. Informing the guests of TİKA’s activities and projects all over the world, Dr. Yorulmaz said of all these activities, reconstruction and restoration play a major role, for they help to transfer our cultural heritage to future generations.

Common points of Mughal and Ottoman Empires in the spotlight

During the symposium, researchers from different parts of the world shared the findings of their research into the Mughal Empire, a Muslim and Turkish state that reigned from 16^th to 19^th centuries in today’s India, one of the most strategic regions in Asia. In the workshops, local and international academicians elaborated on the common points of the Mughal and Ottoman Empires.

Papers to be published by an international publishing house

The symposium will certainly contribute to the studies about the history of Mughal Empire, which has been a neglected topic both in our country and abroad. It will also facilitate new cooperations among researchers studying in this field. Now, the objective is to make sure that the papers presented in the symposium are published by an international publishing house to remind the contributions and to establish new research areas.
