TİKA Supports the Social Infrastructure of Montenegro

Equipped by Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TİKA), the Islamic Community Junior High School was put into service in Plav.

As part of its efforts to contribute to the development of social infrastructure in the cities of Sandžak Region, located in northern Montenegro, TİKA equipped the Islamic Community Junior High School, located next to the Sultanija Mosque, built by Abdul Hamid II in Plav in 1909, and repaired by the Islamic Development Bank in 2019.

The opening ceremony held for the school building after the equipment project was attended by Rifat Fejzić, Head of the Islamic Community of Montenegro; Nihad Canović, Mayor of Plav; Šeko Šabović, Chief Imam of Plav; and Abdurrahman Toprak, TİKA’s Podgorica Program Coordinator. 

Thanks to the support provided for the Junior High School in Plav, which is heavily populated by Muslim Bosniaks and Albanians, the building became available for use as a center for the administrative affairs and cultural, social, and religious services of the Islamic Community and a venue for conferences and seminars. Thus, the visibility, representative standards, and service capacity of the activities to be carried out were improved.

Having been used as a school until 1924 and later converted into a military warehouse, an additional school building, and a police station, the Junior High School was returned to the Islamic Community by the Government of Montenegro in 1991.
