TİKA Contributes Development of Beekeeping in Montenegro

Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TİKA) provided bottom boards for PVC beehives with pollen traps to 65 beekeepers who have the capacity for pollen production among the members of the Union of Beekeepers in Montenegro.

TİKA carries out various projects and activities to improve the level of income of the producer living in rural areas in Montenegro, to contribute to employment in agriculture, to increase the efficiency of agricultural production, and to reduce migration towards bigger cities.

Accordingly, TİKA carried out the “Improving Beekeeping Project” in cooperation with Montenegro Beekeepers Organizations Federation (SPOCG) and provided beehives and equipment support to 65 families since 2017. In addition, the “Start-Up Support Package” was provided to the participants who successfully completed the 6-month beekeeping training program organized in 2021 to promote beekeeping in cooperation with SPOCG and the Ministry of National Education of Montenegro.

10 “Bottom Boards for PVC Beehives with Pollen Traps” for each one of 65 beekeepers, who were selected among 39 Beekeepers Union members working across the country to support pollen production in Montenegro, were delivered by TİKA to diversify beekeeping products and to increase the contribution of beekeeping to economy by creating added value with new products.

President of Montenegro Beekeepers Organizations Federation, Radule Miljaniç thanked Türkiye regarding the project and indicated that the support provided is of great value to them. Expressing his appreciation towards their long-termed cooperation with TİKA, Miljaniç stated that they expect beekeepers to tend towards pollen production along with honey production which could result in both the development of beekeeping and the creation of a source of side income for family economies with the last project.

Speaking at the distribution ceremony held with the participation of beekeepers from all over Montenegro, TİKA’s Coordinator in Podgorica, Abdurrahman S. Toprak noted that TİKA carried out several projects in the fields of agriculture and livestock and stated that the aim is to contribute to the diversification of bee products by creating the opportunity of obtaining alternative products for the families living in different regions of Montenegro through 650 bottom boards for PVC beehives with pollen traps delivered. He said that advanced training in areas suitable for beekeeping is planned in the upcoming period.
