29 December 2022TİKA Supports Educational Infrastructure in Nepal
Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TİKA) renovated and equipped Galaxy English Boarding School, which provides education in the village of Belwa in southern Nepal.
Galaxy English Boarding School teaches 350 students in the village of Belwa, which has a population of 1,900 and is located in Birgunj Municipality in the southern part of Nepal, where nearly 80 percent of the population (approximately 30 million) live in rural areas. TİKA’s project included the renovation of the school and donation of desks, computers, projectors, printers, and various learning materials and pieces of equipment.
The opening ceremony held for the school was attended by Pradeep Yadav, MP for Parsa District; Şevki Mert Barış, TİKA’s Coordinator in Dhaka; villagers; and students. In his speech at the ceremony, Yadav stressed the importance of education in the information age and thanked TİKA and the Turkish people for their support.
Şevki Mert Barış, TİKA’s Program Coordinator in Dhaka, also delivered a speech at the ceremony. He thanked villagers for their support for the project and stated that Türkiye was the first country to provide aid after the great Nepal earthquake in 2015 and has supported Nepal in different areas through TİKA and other institutions since then.
School attendance rates are quite low in Nepal due to the fact that education is not compulsory, that children start working at an early age, especially in rural areas, where the majority of the population live, and that families have difficulty in paying school fees.
